What does Aspie mean?

Aspie is a shorthand way of saying Asperger’s. Asperger’s Syndrome is a form of Autism, known as more high functioning then other forms of Autism.

I won’t go into all the medical symptoms of Asperger’s but the person with Asperger’s has difficulty mostly with social skills. We have difficulty looking people in the eye and understanding social cues. Our social skills are learnt from others around us, from what we read to what we watch and also some of us get professional help for this issue.

We get obsessed with different interests and can talk about them for hours and have an intense focus on them. We love routine and do things the same way a lot and this leads to hating change.

For girls with Asperger’s we show different signs of it especially in social situations. Boys usually get diagnosed a lot easier and faster in some cases than girls due to this. Girls are known for having a “mask” on all the time as we are able to hide our Asperger’s especially in social settings and “fit in”.

Who am I?

I’m a 23 female Aspie who loves to solo travel and I’m also in college studying Digital Marketing and Public Relations.

I got diagnosed at near nineteen years old with having Asperger’s Syndrome and with that came ADD, Generalized Anxiety disorder and now and again depression.

When you diagnosed at such a late age there is really no help for you. The children’s services are out of reach for you and you are left mostly on your own. So to try combat this I did a lot of research online.

And you usually just come across a lot of medical information. Or a lot of negative and hateful information about Asperger’s Syndrome. I have come across hate pages towards Asperger’s Syndrome saying us Aspies aren’t capable of love and that we are crazy, manipulate etc. And there are plenty of other negative things also.

The one that stuck out the most for me was about a girl who got diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and was told she would never achieve the following:

  • Obtain a Driving license
  • Obtain a College degree
  • Be in a relationship
  • Have a job
  • live out of home
  • Get Married
  • Have kids

I was horrified about this and also just a bit panicked. I read through more posts and found that she was not the only one who had things like this said to her.

And this isn’t true. We are capable of a lot then people give to us. We aren’t all Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory but some of us are very smart and the biggest myth of Asperger’s is we don’t have empathy but we do it’s just harder for us to show it.

My blog is to show how I juggle life in my 20s with Asperger’s thrown into the mix.
